[Well, France could choose from a long history of things, but there is one thing that he will never forgive.]

When I was still young, there was a war. It was a very long war, although when I was fighting it, I thought of it as a large number of battles. When you've been fighting for such a long time, you get used to it, but that doesn't mean you stop being afraid of what happens if you lose.

One year, there was a siege. There was plague, too, but not as bad as in other years. Winter was hard.

Then, in the spring, there came a girl. When she spoke, there were all things good and beautiful. We threw the siege, and we rode proud. I thought of things I hadn't thought of in a very long time. I loved her as well and as pure as I've ever loved anything or anyone since.

Two years later, she was ash.

I'm as much responsible as he was, but I can't forgive him what happened any more than I can forgive myself.
