[Jail is fucking boring.]
[They'd stuck Blake in a cell for a while until they figured out something about community service. It was a lot faster than back in the real world, but even crazy bullshit island has red tape. Blake's not sure whether that's nostalgic or not.]
[Cells are the same everywhere, too. He's never been on this side before. The novelty wears off fast.]
[He wishes he had a ball to bounce against the wall or something. They didn't even leave him any of his animals for company. Maybe that's a good thing. He doesn't know how he's going to explain this to Steve.]
[There's nothing but a book, and there's only so much anybody can take of The Dratini Code.]
[Blake leans back on the hard bunk and tosses his phone in one hand. When he got in here the one thing he was sure of was that he didn't want to talk to anybody, but nothing weakens that conviction like a couple hours alone with the hot, uneasy feeling in the back of his head.]
[He flips the phone open before he can think about it too much and says the first thing that comes to mind.]
[The face that comes up on the screen will look a lot less combative and more withdrawn than usual.]
Hey.
You think they have the Shawshank Redemption around here?
Maybe with one of those stupid puns in the title, and he digs his way out with one of those mole things. A little tiny one for finding rocks.
Seems like everything around here is like back home but turned the local kind of stupid. Do they even make any real original movies?
[In the crappy florescent lights shared by jails everywhere, the lines on his face look deep and weathered.]
I'm tired of nothing but the same old thing.
((OOC: Open for calls and visitors! Blake's in jail for punching Parker, but you don't have to broach the topic if you don't want to. He's not real proud of himself, so he'll pussyfoot around it unless asked directly. If you definitely don't want it to come up, just put in an OOC note.))

Thanks. You are a fuckin' lifesaver.
[He leans back and pops it open. Lee you are now his best friend forever.]
[After a good long pull, stuff seems a little easier to face.]
You really teleported here?
no subject
Consider it an apology because I didn't have enough to post bail.
[He pops his own open and crosses his ankle over his knee.]
Not here - to the Center. Figured it'd be easier to find a police station from a hospital.
You gonna tell me what you're in for?
no subject
The teleporting is the point. I thought I knew everything these animals could do. Sounds convenient, though, as long as you don't have to worry about leaving an arm behind or anything.
[Blake turns the beer can around in his hands]
[If anybody'd understand...]
You know that little girl I was looking after, the one who vanished?
I saw somebody wearing her ribbon. Wouldn't answer me, kept trying to run away. What was I supposed to do?
no subject
[But then Carter starts talking, and Lee immediately shuts up to listen. He does understand. He understands with the angry boiling in his veins that made him choke a man to death for taking Clementine from him, the blind fury that made him throw a doctor against the wall and threaten his life for even talking about taking her.]
Shit, Carter, you killed a guy?
[Cause boy howdy is that what it sounds like.]
no subject
What? No!
[He holds his hands up, splashing a little beer around.]
I just punched her!
no subject
So just a fight then? That's not so--
Wait a minute, her? Jesus, it was a woman?
no subject
Scumbags use everything they can to weasel out of facing consequences. The innocent girl act is the oldest trick in the book.
She was resisting arrest and wouldn't answer me. Hit me first.
no subject
Still, man, you don't fucking hit a woman. Shit like that gets you locked up!-- Obviously.
[He goes quiet.]
So you thought she had your little girl?
no subject
[His jaw tightens] Yeah. I did.
If there was a chance of getting Clementine back, would you hesitate?
no subject
The fingers of the hand not holding the can tighten around his bicep, digging in through the material of his shirt, at that last remark.]
You know there's no damn chance of either of them coming back, Carter. At least, nothing we can do.
Clem and I have been through more together than you can imagine. I damn well wouldn't hesitate if I thought I could find her. But I can't follow her back home, even if I knew the way out of here. No place for me there anymore.
no subject
[That hits him like a punch in the gut, and he snarls back before he can think] I know that, goddammit!
[He gets up and starts pacing the cell, barely remembering to set the beer can down before the violence of his gestures throw it across the room]
[Lee has to be all goddamn calm and reasonable, and that makes it worse.]
Go ahead, tell me you've never done something stupid because you were pissed off and it felt right.
no subject
Sure. Who hasn't? Everybody fucks up once in a while, that's how life goes.
I killed the last man who tried to take Clementine away from me. He scared her, lied to her, told her he could find her parents. I came so fucking close to losing her, and I don't know what I would've done if he'd hurt her. So I do know how you feel, man. Don't think I don't. But this ain't the same thing at all.
Besides, if Emily was still here, you think she'd want to see you locked up like this? You gotta be an example.
no subject
[Blake stops dead and shock shows on his face. It doesn't last long before his expression hardens.]
If he was trying to steal a kid from you, he was asking for it.
[He turns his face away.]
I never claimed to be a role model for anybody.
no subject
Not like there were any cops to call on him. The guy had gone through some seriously fucked up shit. [His own expression hardens.] I had to make sure he couldn't take anybody from anyone again.
[Lee sets his beer on the floor and stands up, taking a step closer to the bars.]
You became a role model the minute you started looking after that little girl.
Besides, shit, you're a cop. Everybody trusts a cop.
[Oops.]
no subject
[coldly] Good.
The whole world's better off when that kind of son of a bitch is gone.
[The lines on Blake's forehead deepen. He puts a hand out and leans on the cell's cool stone wall.]
It doesn't matter, now that she's gone.
[It takes a second for the next part to sink in.]
[Blake walks over to the bunk. He sits down. He breathes in, long and slow, before his head falls into his hands.]
[He laughs and laughs.]
You. [He points at Lee.] You are funny.
no subject
Sure it does. What, you don't want to be the kind of guy a little kid can look up to? Even if she's not here anymore - she might come back.
[That hope is the only thing that keeps him going about Clementine's disappearance.]
I say something funny?
no subject
I never got along real well with kids. Scared em, I think. Don't know why she decided to like me.
[slowly, his laughter dries up.]
[His voice is distant and strange.] It's a weird thing, isn't it? You could be anybody, but you put the uniform on and people listen to you. They do what you say.
I loved that.
no subject
[He's not sure that he likes the tone in Carter's voice, there. He lets the conversation timer run nearly out before he decides what to say.]
That uniform carries a lot of responsibility. Society as a whole owes a hell of a lot to the men and women who decide to wear it.
no subject
[Blake tended to be one of those people who assumed kids were dumb and didn't really pay attention to anything. She proved him wrong a lot.]
[he huffs a disbelieving sound] A lot of people don't see it that way. Hell, these days everybody grabs onto their kids around us.
no subject
I know what you mean about that. Didn't take me long to shape up knowing Clem was there.
[He hesitates, and then raises an eyebrow.]
You know, going around beating on women in the middle of the street isn't exactly doing anything to get rid of that image.
no subject
[There was actually somebody to worry about being a bad influence on.]
Hey. I'm not some psycho attacking people for no good reason.
I'm not even police here. [He sounds lost.] If I was, there wouldn't've been a problem, because I would've gotten everybody on the case the minute she went missing.
no subject
[...]
[Lee doesn't think he needs to remind Carter that their little girls are gone for good, permanently. For now, anyway. This isn't a kidnapping - it's actually reversing the kidnapping of bringing them here. He sits back down and slumps, his elbows holding himself up.]
Still, you don't just up and resort to violence on a woman, that shit ain't right. Surely to god you learned better ways to detain suspects than by beating on them, didn't you?
[If not he'll just be over here...glad that he wasn't arrested in Philly.]
no subject
If somebody's attacking you, what are you gonna do? Just stand there and let her hit you? I'm nobody's punching bag.
It's as easy or as hard as they make it. Sure, I'd rather bring them in quietly, but if they try to fight or run, it gets rough. Murderers don't get kid gloves.
no subject
And who the fuck said she was a murderer?
[Whoa there friend. I think you need to sit down.]
no subject
[without thinking] I wasn't talking about her.
