[Jail is fucking boring.]

[They'd stuck Blake in a cell for a while until they figured out something about community service. It was a lot faster than back in the real world, but even crazy bullshit island has red tape. Blake's not sure whether that's nostalgic or not.]

[Cells are the same everywhere, too. He's never been on this side before. The novelty wears off fast.]

[He wishes he had a ball to bounce against the wall or something. They didn't even leave him any of his animals for company. Maybe that's a good thing. He doesn't know how he's going to explain this to Steve.]

[There's nothing but a book, and there's only so much anybody can take of The Dratini Code.]

[Blake leans back on the hard bunk and tosses his phone in one hand. When he got in here the one thing he was sure of was that he didn't want to talk to anybody, but nothing weakens that conviction like a couple hours alone with the hot, uneasy feeling in the back of his head.]

[He flips the phone open before he can think about it too much and says the first thing that comes to mind.]

[The face that comes up on the screen will look a lot less combative and more withdrawn than usual.]

You think they have the Shawshank Redemption around here?

Maybe with one of those stupid puns in the title, and he digs his way out with one of those mole things. A little tiny one for finding rocks.

Seems like everything around here is like back home but turned the local kind of stupid. Do they even make any real original movies?

[In the crappy florescent lights shared by jails everywhere, the lines on his face look deep and weathered.]

I'm tired of nothing but the same old thing.

[It's a second before Blake realizes somebody's talking to him and looks up to see Rude.]

[Rude shrugs his shoulders.]

[When you're in his line of work, you see a lot of stuff that gets swept under the carpet.]

It's not so bad as jails go. No Aryan Brotherhood gangs or anybody trying to stick you in the kidney with a shiv. No old friends.

[If Blake ever somehow ended up in prison at home, there'd be guys lined up around the block to get a piece of him.]

Just until they figure out something about community service. Not a real complex justice system around here.

[So around a day or two then. That's really not too bad at all. But that's not the main crux of the situation is it? The main reason Rude's here isn't to talk about prison stays.]

[Those blank sunglasses stare impassively back.]

[Blake sighs, all the smartass edge draining out of him.]

[He rubs his neck and admits] Like shit.

[Rude nods; that's to be expected. Which is why he came prepared with a deck of cards that he somehow managed to slip in.

He's no good with words so he won't try using them. He would probably be able to converse better with a good game.

...let's play a few rounds.

It's...something to do.

[If any of the police force have something to say about an innocent card game, then they'll have to deal with Rude. Blake's no flight risk anyway; it looks like all the fight has gone out of him.]

[Blake's kind of surprised by how that simple thing makes him feel a little better. Rude doesn't look like he's going to give him any shit about being here.]

[He sits on the edge of the bunk near the bars.]

Does wherever you come from have poker?

[It's always important to take joy in the simple things in life, whether it's cards or the thrill of a fight. Rude takes a seat and starts shuffling the cards.]

Not too sure about the rules.

It's the same as here though.

[Cards shuffling is a familiar, homelike sound.]

[There's a creaky folding table to pull up to the bars. It's a little awkward to stick his hands through, but he manages.]

[He doesn't feel real chatty, but it's not so bad to have some company.]

[Welcome to Rude's world; he's not one for much conversation either.

Cards dealt, Rude proceeds to start the game. It's clear from the first two rounds that Rude's not half bad at the game; it helps that his default expression is quite similar to a Poker Face already. As the game goes on Rude passes, folds and calls accordingly...well, not exactly. He might have had a winning hand every now and then that he willingly folds on.

Not that Blake would've noticed that of course; Rude's game face is on.]

[It's been a while since Blake has done this, but he gets back into the feel of it pretty quick. Almost as quick as he gives up on reading Rude's expression.]

Used to play with the guys back at the station all the time. Been a while, now.

How many in your team?

[A Queen of Hearts? Rude's thumb flicks across the edge of the card before he folds the hand and let's Blake win this round.]

You mean for cards or on the job?

[Blake's only half paying attention to the game, just following the rhythm. It's a calming, normal thing.]

Lately I got partnered up with a real piece of work. One of those pushy assholes who thinks he knows everything.

[Rude looks up from his hand briefly at Blake's description of his partner, before his eyes flick back down to check his cards. Two Spades and Two Diamonds? He's going to try and bluff this.]

Usually a partner.

[Glances down at his hand. Three of a kind, not great but not bad. He'll call.]

Haven't had great luck with them, though.

[Hmm. A five and six. Rude decides to keep the hand and raises.]

[Blake calls, as one hand drums on the side of the table.]

You say your job's not the safe, clean type. Whoever you work with, you must watch each other's backs a lot.

[Rude flips over a card; an eight? Hmm. Getting a bit risky, but Rude's always been one for risk. He raises.]

I trust my partner with my life.

[And he says as such with a tone of finality; there is no questioning his faith in Reno.]

[Blake doesn't notice that it's his turn. He's also not aware that he's gripping his cards until they bend.]

Ever been stabbed in the back?

Yeah.

[The state of his cards aren't going unnoticed, but he keeps mum on that and just waits.]

[His other hand stops tapping and is instead gripping the edge of the table, by where it's pressed up against the bars.]

Somebody you trusted? Somebody who'd been playing you for a fool all along?

[...this is going to be one of those opening up moments, isn't it? Rude's starting to feel a bit awkward and nervous...not that he's showing it.]

[Blake doesn't have a lot of skill at that opening up thing either.]

[Rude folds his hand and gives up the round; possibly the only indication he's going to give that this is a topic he's not comfortable with.]
