That's not how it works. I mean, yeah, you need the phone to do anything with it, but the account works like...I don't know, like a bank account. You lose the bankbook, you got yourself a problem, but that doesn't mean the money in your name just up and vanishes.
I did some work in one of the Centers here; I can't tell you how many morons came in with a broken phone 'cause they sat on it, kicked it, dropped it, made breakfast on it, whatever. They got a whole stack of 'em in the back, and they just activate a new one and hand 'em out like candy, ten minutes or less.
If she's still out there somewhere, even with a busted phone, calling her ought to get you her answering machine, not a "this number is no longer in service" message.
