[Their world was cruel- expectations piled on tiny shoulders, hatred cycling and driving each of their actions. It was entirely possible though, still, for the children to live out their lives in relative safety as a civilian, rarely seeing the horrors of wars being fought outside the boundaries of their village.

But those with a clan name, with special abilities, were never given that option. If they didn't learn to fight, and early, they were in more danger than being sent out on the front lines. Other villages were always looking to increase their military ability, and kidnapping a child to exploit was hardly beneath them.
